ACTIVITIES
• A visit to one of the most beautiful medieval villages in Catalonia.
• A 3 hour gentle walk, following one of the most impressive ‘caminos de ronda’ on the Catalan coast.
• Free time to enjoy one of the Brava Coast’s last beaches to remain almost completely unexploited.
THE AREA
The Brava Coast’s Baix Empordà province in the north east of Catalonia is a place of exceptional natural beauty and home to a scattering of medieval villages which seem to have been stuck in time. The beautiful but rough coastline sculpted by the sea and the violent Tramontana wind have formed a multitude of stunning and untouched coves and inlets, semi hidden between cliffs and pine trees.
DESCRIPTION OF THE TOUR
We leave Barcelona behind us and head north to find ourselves in countryside full of villages and medieval counties where spectacular traditional country mansions are located, along with vast fields of various crops and fruit groves.
Our first stop will be in one of the last virgin areas on the Brava Coast, where our walking route starts. The itinerary we will follow is one of the most spectacular trails on the ‘Caminos de Ronda’ network of walking routes. These routes follow ancient trails which were used by travellers and villagers to journey along the coast. The trail we will follow passes some of the Brava Coast’s last remaining untouched coves and inlets. The scenery is exceptional and you really get the feel of the place where over 2500 years ago Iberian tribes made their settlements.
After the walking tour, we will go to the beautiful historic centre of Pals , a real jewel which has remained almost untouched since medieval times. This amazing little village, which has been restored and kept all its streets and houses in the original gothic style, has received numerous national prizes in the category of Fine Arts and Tourism and has been declared an area of historic and artistic interest. The village is located in an ideal spot which allows an unforgettable panoramic picture of one of the most beautiful views in Catalonia.
After visiting the village and sitting awhile to contemplate the spectacular view, we will continue our journey by road for about 20 minutes before arriving at the vast Pals beach. Until recently, this was the site of the massive “radio liberty” antennas which transmitted North American radio programmes in Europe during the Cold War. The antennas have been both hated and loved by the locals. Hated because the did not fit in with the surroundings, but now loved as they have been seen to conserve a rich ecosystem which has not survived on any other part of the Catalan coast. From the beach, or whilst taking a quick dip in the sea, we can view the extensive sand dunes and indigenous vegetation.
