As an archaeologist, author and publisher of books on the International Brigades in Spain and now living in Barcelona I am pleased to offer three day tours in the English language to the battle of the Ebro to explore the museums and little known places where the XI (German), XIII (Polish) and XV (English speaking) International Brigades fought during the summer of 1938. From where the XV International Brigade crossed the Ebro visitors can follow the route and actions of the 35th Division towards Gandesa, Hill 481 ('The Hill of Death'), Hill 666 and the final stand of the XV Brigade before they were withdrawn on September 23rd 1938 after two months of bloody fighting.
Hand crafted tours can be tailor made according to visitors' level of fitness and level of knowledge of the conflict and provide a unique and enjoyable break away from the busy nightlife of Barcelona. The chance to explore rural Catalunya with your expert guide, author and historian provides a unique opportunity to recount to your family and friends.
There are many books written about the International Brigades and if you would like to encounter the written experiences from where the preparation for the battle took place close to the Ebro and also the battlesites themselves then my many happy customers can affirm the remarkable experiences that these tours provide.
In addition bespoke tours can be provided to Jarama, Brunete, Belchite, Teruel, the Great Retreats and the Aragon Front where George Orwell fought and whose experiences were vividly described in 'Homage to Catalonia'. For those wishing to stay in Barcelona a less intensive day tour of the City and places where George Orwell describes in the same book is offered with lunch at places connected with the Spanish Civil War. Places associated with the International Brigades including the route of the final parade held on October 28th 1938 plus footage of the parade can be shown and other less well known places associated with the conflict can also be visited around the city too.
